I have participated in workshops for therapists and volunteered in a retreat centre in a rainforest in Brazil since the young age of 13. This has shaped my relationship with life and the environment around me, as I learned to sense beyond physicality and trust my intuition.
I trained in Emotional Somatic Education based in the Formative Psychology of Stanley Keleman for 2 years, attended Dance and Somatics education at ISLO for a year and recently started training in the somatic bodywork Trager Approach.
Answers to frequently asked questions
A session can look and feel like a gentle and soft massage and helps in releasing tension and stress among other benefits. One of the differences to traditional massage is that Trager approach helps the person's mind-body to find easier ways of being, and thus prevent or reduce tension and stress.
Bodywork is a term used to describe a therapeutic or developmental technique that involves working with the body through touch.
Trager®, or Trager® approach is a somatic bodywork technique developed by Milton Trager. It is a somatic exploration/movement education that is also known as psychophysical integration or mind-body integration. One practical result in terms of this integration is the development of better coordination and easier cross-lateral movement, which can translate to easier body movement.
There is a national association that promotes Trager in Finland.
Somatics is a word that comes from the Greek soma and literally means body. Somatics is a term that is often used in contrast to mind, expressing that something has its origin in the body, not in the mind or a combination of both.
Somatics also refers to an inner perception of the body, or inner experience. Somatic education is when this inner experience is used in learning, cognitively or by movement.
The term somatics started to be used in the mid 1900's when professionals who had contact with eastern cultures started to integrate their techniques into western culture and professions, most commonly in context that have movement and/or are therapeutical. Eastern cultures have a long tradition of somatic practices, such as yoga, martial arts and butoh.
